Author and Journalist Ahmet Altan Sentenced to Life in Prison

February 16

In a move that has been deemed "a horrific assault on freedom of expression" by Pen America, a Turkish court has sentenced author and journalist Ahmet Altan to life in prison, at the conclusion of a months-long trial that has garnered the attention of press freedom advocates the world over. Also sentenced over allegations of involvement in the 2016 coup attempt were Altan's brother, Mehmet Altan, journalist and former Turkish MP Nazlı Ilıcak, and three other defendants.

Europa Editions stands with the International Press Institute, PEN International, and other press freedom advocates in solidarity with Altan and the nearly 100 imprisoned Turkish journalists.
